Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 10-year-old pupil who was found unresponsive in Kebisoni Sub-county after leaving home twice on Thursday evening.

Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the death of a 10-year-old boy from Kebisoni Sub-county, which occurred on Thursday, May 8, 2026.

The deceased has been identified as Benedicto Gumisiriza, a pupil at Mutariga Primary School and resident of Nyamubogore Cell, Nyeibingo Parish in Rukungiri District.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate, it is alleged that the child left home through a window after locking his room on the afternoon of May 8 at around 2pm.

Maate said the boy later returned home at about 7:30pm, where he was questioned by his mother, Kentaro Evelyn, about his whereabouts.

“He again left home shortly after the conversation,” Maate said.

The child was later found unresponsive at around 9:00pm by his elder sister, Nduhukire Ruth, who immediately alerted their mother.

Maate confirmed that the matter was reported to police, prompting a response from the District Police Commander and a team of officers who visited the scene, recorded statements, and documented initial findings.

“The body was handed over to relatives for burial,” he said.

He added that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of death as inquiries continue.

Police have urged the public to remain calm as investigations proceed and to avoid speculation until official findings are released.
